Critical thinking is what allows us to form opinions and judgement on issues and ideas, for example artworks. When we think critically about artwork we ask questions about the subject, and try to look at more than just the surface. In answering these questions we get a broader understanding of the purpose of the work and in doing so, can begin to form opinions about it, such as whether we like it or whether it conveys the idea well, or whether we can relate to it. Every person’s ideas about an artwork will be different because of our experiences and who we are and how that affects our viewing of an artwork. Critical thinking is important in analysing others’ work as well as our own and helps to hone our sense of what we want to say, and what we want to see.
